Belah

Causuarina cristata

Form: Evergreen, Timber suitable internal use only, especially as pole wood. Tall and slender to 8 m.

Functions: Pollen attracts native bees. Windbreak, Accumulates phosphorous in its root zone. Provides frost protection for other species. Shade tree. Suitable for co-planting next to Bunya and Hoop Pine where it may be cut back to coppice periodically or sacrificed. For More Info Go to: Drought Buster Trees and Fungus

Frost and Hardiness: Handles minus 10 C once established. Unaffected by frost at all life stages. Ultra-tough tree in dry times.

Planting: Year-round with tree guard first year minimum recommended. Maintain periodic watering. Requires less water to establish than White Cedar. Select planting sites that have no horses grazing.

FOREST TUBES: Seedlings are not perfectly shaped, however with pruning a straight growing point will develop. Forest Tubes weigh about 200 grams plus.

Growth Rate: With average rainfall seedlings should be self-sufficient within 12 months. In rich loam soil trees can grow 6 metres in 7 years. In poorer sandy country with clay sub-soil trees have grown 3 metres in 9 years years, and now seem to be picking up pace. Responds to base pruning if needed.

Natural Range and Soil Type: 400 to 700mm rainfall zones throughout Inland Brigalow Belt and Vine Scrub of Great Divide. Grows naturally in heavy black soil and lighter loams.

Predators: Everything eats Belah. Horses, cattle, sheep, roos. Rabbits will demolish unprotected seedlings during dry periods.

Belah Seed Kits: Another option is “Grow your Own Belah” with a Belah Seed Kit. Belah is the easiest and fastest tree to propagate that we sell. If you want low cost seedlings in bulk, then this may be a viable option for you. You will find Seed Kits in Our Seed Section
