Gardens of Lucerne is a made for Free Range Chickens. It is integrated with Seasonal Food Crops for People. Main task at hand here (current) is to eliminate tall tussock grasses + couch grass. Area under development is 50 metres long X 8 metres wide with 3 laying hens being rotated behind portable fence panels. SEE LINK BELOW: Fallow Farrow Furrow Method to Grow Soil Matter Naturally

This garden uses low cost portable housing for the birds to lay eggs. Lucerne is grown in hedgerows with variable widths between rows of lucerne.  With 200,000 Lucerne Seeds per KG you could potentially seed more than 1 to 2 kilometres of hedgerow with 1 kg lucerne. Lucerne is an evergreen that thrives year round under ideal conditions. It is a source of green fodder for all types of domestic poultry. Remarkably: mature pigs can live almost entirely on green lucerne fodder.  PLUS SEED DEAL with TOP 3 Warm Season Seeds = See Below Or Order as Individual Seeds to Add to Other Seed and Tree Items.

Gardening Starts with Long Life Infrastructure made to last 80 plus years . It can rely exclusively upon Portable Fencing or a combination of Permanent with Portable. Garden of Lucerne is 50 metres long x 9 metres wide.

STARTING BELOW: The Mattock follows the Chicken as a New Garden is made from Grassland.

This PORTABLE Chicken House is Dog Safe and so far resistant to 100km Winds. It can be improved with light weight materials and by moving internal roost bar away from chickens feed dishes as Crows can jump up eat the chickens food.  OR START with a New Design based on a Roof and Perch Only. Portable Chicken Yard Panels then prevents dogs accessing chickens space.

This section has just been manually worked (and seeded with barley and canary and daikon radish) with a mattock as the chicken house moves forward. Millet and Canary is the smallest seed = Best Value = Use these Cereal Crops to outcompete grasses and cut as green fodder for chooks.

PHOTO ABOVE: FIRST WORKING with MATTOCK from GRASSLAND and now Planted to Daikon Radish. 3 months ago calves had access here to established Old Man Saltbush. Sheep were then held here for several night. Chickens have helped to kept the ground bare of new shoots for last 8 weeks. Recent rainfall of 14 mm was an opportunity to start working the top soil. 100 Daikon Radish Seed per square metre was rough planted into this first working with mattock. Extra water was applied after planting = now 50 mm rainfall equivalent to establish.

Frost will keep new grasses in check until late August. In Sept we may return sheep and/or chickens to plant hedgerows of lucerne. To eliminate grasses we rework the soil with different plant species and animal movements. OBJECTIVE HERE is to establish Lucerne Patch for Chickens Fodder Crop. Portable Fencing is essential.  DATE of PHOTO: 06/07/23

Green Strips of Millet planted with a mattock in March. Chickens can come back to graze or you chip and cover as mulch or pull and lay as mulch once plants are big enough. This is one basic component of eliminating grasses with smother crops also know as “living fallows”.

Yellow DOTS indicate new planting of Lucerne as a Hedge Crop. Millet from above has been “chipped and rolled” to decompose.

Patch of Winter Barley planted with a mattock at week 3. Barley can be cut 2-3 times as “green fodder” for chooks until it seeds + dies off in summer.

Emerging Lucerne at day 7 is growing well. Best planting window for Lucerne is March April or August September with a bit of extra heat to activate growth.  Lucerne is Winter Active yet it will grow year round provided moisture is available. Plants can live for 3 years. They shut down when it is dry. Lucerne needs to be periodically cut with a knife OR grazed with sheep/chickens to maintain lush growth.
