Form and Function: Annual Cereal. Grows to 500mm height. Plant as a hedge or as a thicket for mulch or smother crop.
Water: Grows as a Dryland Summer Crop in 600 mm rainfall zones.
Fodder: All grazing animals. Green pick for poultry. Earthworm food when cut and laid.
Good Thing: Birds rarely if ever attack standing seed heads.
Mulch: Self Mulches or hand harvest soft stems as needed.
Add: To fermenting liquid fertilisers.
People: Eat Millet with husk removed which is important. Suitable very small amounts with husk on if ground for flour in gravies. Best to ferment first to break down protein inhibitors.
Planting Window: Warm Season. September to March.
Seed Supplied: Small Seed. 10 grams per square metre for thickets. One plant produces hundreds of seeds.
Maturity: 4 Months to seed. Can be cut whilst growing and still go on to set seed.
Suitable Soil Type: All Types if nutrient is provided. Grows in local area as dryland crop. Favours lighter soils but will prosper in heavy downs soils when moisture is available.
Planting Methods: Tilled beds with seed shallow planted.
General: Prior to rice, Millet was the dominant grain crop of Japan. Considered to be best mulch available from grain crops.

PHOTO 1: Patch of 8 week old Millet (or this green patch could also be Canary or Barley. At 8 weeks you almost can not tell them apart). At this stage you you can use a sharp knife to cut stalks as “green fodder” for chooks + turkeys + duck + geese. Give it water it will regrow. Density here is about 100 seedlings per square metre.
