TRAMPLE Planting Seed with Livestock = Works best with small seed + a standing body of plant matter/grasses + sufficient moisture + taking advantage of seasonal temperatures to match species. EG: Lucerne is best Autumn to August. You can also use “containment of animals” on any scale from a few square metres with sheep or say 1000 square metres with cattle behind a hotwire.

DESMANTHUS is a Long Term Perennial that increases in plant density every year provided you let it set seed. SO you can (1) Broadcast Seed into Grassland Winter or Early Summer. Seed waits in mulch for rain. Insects do not eat the seed + it can remain viable in soil for many years. (2) ADD SEED to Molasses SEE PHOTO BELOW. ALSO: From say 10 hectares you can contain animals behind 1 hectare with a hot wire to plant 1kg seed initially. Once plants set seed bring in grazing animals to spread seed via dung.

DAIKON RADISH works well in hard frost country with enough ground moisture as the Daikon can easily smother dry frosted grasses. Ideal planting in South Qld is April or on the first frost. Seedlings survive minus 5 however they do grow slower if planted later in the season.

PLANTING WINDOW for DESMANTHUS South Qld should concludes January as it takes 5 months for seed set – Next Planting Window is Winter as seed lies dormant until Spring.

Lucerne + Daikon Radish is ideally planted from Late March onwards according to available moisture. ON THIS PAGE BELOW Order 1k Lucerne + 500 grams Daikon Radish + 500 grams Canary Seed for $48.00 plus $12 Pack n Post. Canary is a Small Annual Grain ideal as Green Pick for Grazing Birds. ADD MORE Selected Seeds to your Order with FLAT RATE $12 Pack n Post

trample planting

Once you have a standing body of grass you have a layer of mulch to cover small seeds. Small seeds will grow up and through the flattened grass especially over frosty winters.

This grass mulch will now strike desmanthus on 100mm of rainfall + then add another 200 mm rainfall to successfully establish over Spring/Summer. Desmanthus preferes heavy black soil and rich loams.

50mm of Autumn rain will now easily strike Canary and Lucerne and Daikon Radish here.

trample planting

Previous tall dense grass has been eaten and flattened most recently during extreme dry period. Mulch is of sufficient depth to broadcast small seeds into + then wait for rain. OR you broadcast seed into a standing body of grass and then commence trampling process. DATE of PHOTO: 01/10/23 Desmanthus and Lucerne is already established in this area. Once it rains again Lucerne will regrow from its established root system as will Desmanthus. Desmanthus seed bank in ground will start to strike new seedlings as well.

trample

Sheep contained in Portable Yards for several nights will cover small seeds with manure. Excess nutrients will rot some seeds so you should experiment first. SUITABLE for DAIKON RADISH with Applied Water to Strike Seed.

trample

800 square metre Standing Body of Grass was Broadcast with 800 grams Desmanthus Seed December 2023. Cattle eat back tall grasses letting sunlight in and grind seed into contact with the soil. The more mulch on the ground the better the strike rate. These cattle were contained here for 24 hours. OBJECTIVE HERE is to establish a Patch that can set seed – cattle then return to eat ripe seed pods and so distribute seed across the entire paddock over following seasons.

lucerne

Lucerne trample planted August 2022 into grassland. It has grown and established and was recently eaten off – it was not visible to the eye only 14 days ago. Here it is reshooting after heavy grazing and a six month dry spell after 80 mm of November Rain 2023. Lucerne plants will persist for 3-5 years with proper grazing management. lick desmanthus

Camp Oven used for mixing Molasses and Desmanthus Seed. Single Cow will lick + consume 50 grams of seed every day with 1 litre of molasses. Some seed then emerges from manure. GOOD MOISTURE is REQUIRED to Establish Seedlings.

THIS METHOD is SLOW and STEADY with Potential Mixed Results. BEST WAY is to Fast Track Desmanthus by Broadcasting into Standing Body of Grass then Trample. WINTER is also Suitable Planting Window as Hard Seed Coating breaks down as seed lies waiting for moisture and heat in Spring. Seed is kept safe as it has no known insect predators.

EXPERIMENTAL 3 SEED KIT ORDER BELOW supplied in Calico Bags useful for Drying Seeds – 1 kg Lucerne + 500 grams Daikon Radish + 500 grams Canary Seed.

1 kg (300,000 Seeds) Lucerne if evenly spread under ideal conditions will cover 2000 to 10,000 square metres. However what we want is not what you want. Sometimes you might increase seed density to ensure a strike as not all seed will germinate.

1 to 10 plants of Lucerne per square metre might be ideal. But then again you might want it thicker. All you can do is get the seed out and wait, watch and learn.
